BOAT FESTIVAL
BOITA BANDANA
In the holy month of Kartika, people of Odisha give up non-vegetarian food and the last five days of this auspicious month is called “Panchuka”. The last day being Kartika Purnima. People of Odisha wake up early in the morning, take bath and visit temples to celebrate Kartika Purnima or the boat festival. This is the full moon day of the holy month. We go to the near-by water body to float miniature boats with lighted lamps, Betal leaves, flower, coin, supari and cracker fruit to mark the boat festival or the Boita Bandana. On this festival people also make beautiful Rangolis representing Boita Bandana theme. Tarana and Gaj is offered as prasad to the almighty.
BOITA BANDANA RANGOLISPECIAL PRASAD (TARANA)
Boita Bandana is a mass commemoration of the maritime glory of the people of Kalinga (Odisha). Ancient Traders sailed from Kalinga to distant land such as Sri Lanka, Java, Sumatra and Bali for trade. Some Odia people also believe the tradition is meant to offer prayer to the ancestors and seek their blessings.
